Today is my 8th wedding anniversary, and hubby and I are going to spend the day together to celebrate! He bought me a drill and an incredible set of attachements for the drill. It is an awesome, needed and thoughtful gift, and I'm a lucky girl. I hope you have someone in your life that appreciates you, too. It is such a blessing.
I had a blast playing with my neice this weekend, so I feel rejuvinated and ready to hit the easel hard for my fall shows. I've got four coming up. It promises to be fabulously fun!
My neice, Sarah, had been here, so I've been playing with Legos and sidewalk chalk. It's good to be a kid sometimes.

Living with an open attitude and a loving heart is something to which I aspire.
We had no air conditioning for 3 days, so it has taken me awhile to "catch up" in the house. And, the 12 week class I teach through Coastal started on Monday, so I've been happily busy. I did this little fish yesterday. It felt good to be back in the studio. One thing I've realized lately is that no one, no matter how mean, can rob you of your joy if you consciously choose it every day. The reason is this: there is a huge difference between happiness and joy. Happiness depends on what's happening. Joy comes from a deeper place - knowing and walking with God every day - and no one can take it away from you.
"Pennies From Heaven" is one of my all time favorite songs. I like the way Louis Armstrong sings it, and I like the way Billie Holiday sings it. It reminds me look for the positive side to every bad thing that happens.
The anniversary of 9/11 got me thinking about how important it is to have hope; the sun always symbolizes hope to me because it rises every morning to light the world.
This piece was spurred by my friend Melanie, and her sister, Jackie. Please pray for Jackie, as she is dealing with a health issue right now.
Painting this seahorse got me thinking about what a unique creature it is, considering the fact that it is the male that becomes pregnant. Guess you could call 'em "Mr. Mom"!
This piece is one of my "morning paintings" - done first thing in the morning, as a sort of artistic form of journaling. Since it was done on cardboard, it wasn't intended to sell.
Here's the sketch transferred (to the wood table top that is 30" in diameter) first with charcoal, then with paint. At this point, I decided to make both fish face their friend!
Here's the finished product. I get so engrossed when I'm painting that I forgot to take more "in progress" pictures. Bits of broken mirror serve as her scales. This piece is on top of an armoire at The Big Tuna, and is for sale there.

I was inspired to paint this portrait of Dr. King. I really like close up/partial portraits like these. They seem more like a "slice of life" than a traditional portrait.
